How to become a lockdown defender. Defensive is a skill just like offense, and it can be worked on and improved when you understand the different components. In this video we break the 3 major components to defense:
Mental: this is the strategy and IQ aspect of defense. You can improve your defensive IQ by understanding where you help is, what the offense is trying to do, and also the tendencies of the player you are trying to guard. By doing this you can be one step ahead of the player you are guarding.
Technical: this is your footwork on defense, you ability to use defensive slides, hip flips, crossover runs, and the proper angles effectively at the right time and place. This is something all great defenders like Jrue Holiday, Marcus Smart, Patrick Beverly all do really well.
Physical: this can be improved by being in the weight room and getting bigger, faster and stronger, but it can also be improved by just knowing how to use your body and hands effectively to make the offensive players job more difficult.
Lastly, is your effort, you need to take pride in playing defense and want to provide value to your team on the defensive end. If you can combine all of these things, you will be a LOCKDOWN DEFENDER.
