The French 75 is one of the most iconic champagne cocktail out there. Of course as with most drinks, it's history is murky and there are at least two versions of it's creation. What we know for sure is that is was first published in Harry Craddock's Savoy Cocktail book in 1930 (surprise, surprise). Other than that there are two competing origin stories.
The first is that Scotsman Harry MacElhone, owner of Harry's American Bar in Paris, named the drink in 1926. The inspiration for it's name was the Howitzer 75mm Field gun used by the French during WWI. This particular gun was known for it's accuracy and speed. The French 75 cocktail was known to have such a kick that it felt like getting hit by such a gun. MacElhone never claimed authorship of the drink and actually pointed at a bartender named Macgarry of London's Buck Club as the actual creator.
Version number two posits that the history of the drink goes back further than the 1920's and cites that Charles Dickens used to offer Old Tom Gin and Champagne cups to his visitors as far back as 1867.
There is also a school of thought which points to Cognac as the spirit used in the original recipe.
Although Harry Craddock cannot claim authorship of the drink he did popularize it in the cocktail world. As soon it was printed in a book, it travelled across the Atlantic and found a home at New York's Stork Club, which is where it was cemented as an iconic beverage. Nowadays the French 75 is a household name and one of the staple drinks in New Orleans.
