Every Sunday Tom Cannavan of wine-pages.com chooses a new wine of the week. For 22nd March 2015, the McGuigan, Classic Semillon Blanc 2013 from Australia is his Wine of the Week. Declared on the label as coming from South Eastern Australia, this 12% abv Semillon doesn't come from one of the famous Australian single appellations for this variety, the Hunter or Barossa Valleys, but it is a delightful example of a fairly typical style. Feather-light, lemony, with a shimmering freshness, some ageing on the lees also gives a bit of creamy texture and depth in the mouth, as well as hints of more exotically juicy fruit. These wines, perhaps surprisingly, can age very nice too, gaining honey and toasty richness over eight to 10 years.
