If your Firebird oil boiler or furnace won't start or fire up, is stalling or caught repeatedly trying to relight? Your Photocell may be covered in soot. Here is how to do a quick free fix to get your heating working again. Then call a Pro to service your system, it is probably running rich, using too much fuel and stinking up the environment. (This unit smells like an old diesel truck on a cold morning)
I am not a heating or service professional, do not open equipment like this without referring to the owners manual. Disconnect from mains power. Do so at your own risk.
The photocell or CAD cell is an electric eye that detects the presence of the burner flame. If the flame is extinguished, the photocell closes off the oil supply for safety. If your boiler or burner furnace needs a service it may be burning rich with a smokey flame and this coats the CAD cell with soot. The Heating system tries to ignite to heat your water, but it gets caught in a loop of lighting and stopping continuously. It may manifest itself in much reduced warming of radiators in your home or a repeating humming or an odd whump noise from your central heating system. In some systems this could mean excess unburnt fuel in the chamber and should be investigated by a professional heating engineer.
