A water main break closed Western Boulevard near I-440 on Wednesday afternoon. One of the busiest intersections in Raleigh has been flooded and closed due to a major water main break – and the road won't reopen until Monday.
The break caused heavy flooding, buckled roads and detoured traffic on Western Boulevard near Interstate 440 on Wednesday afternoon. The road is closed between Blue Ridge Road and Chaney Road as crews work on the repairs. It will be closed until Monday morning because of the unusually thick asphalt and concrete slabs.
The force of the water seriously damaged asphalt laid down just months ago when the intersection was converted to a diverging diamond interchange. That ongoing construction is dealing with one more hurdle.
All traffic on Western Boulevard is getting diverted onto the I-440 belt line in both directions. Detours are in place and drivers should seek alternate routes.
There is no word on the cause of the water main break.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation said it does not think the water main break will impact construction or road work in the area.
On Wednesday, Raleigh Water issued a boil water advisory for water customers near Western Boulevard and I-440. The city said consumers should boil all water for consumption.
According to the city, customers will receive a notice when the boil water notice is lifted.
City officials are also hearing reports of low pressure in some nearby areas, which is likely due to debris from the break interfering with the screens on the water meters.
Crews are now digging through the brand new pavement to try and isolate where the leak is coming from.
WRAL News received reports of nearby townhouses without water due to the break. A Raleigh Water spokesperson said it was the townhouse community near the intersection of Blue Ridge Road and Western Boulevard along with some houses off of Method Road.
