There are more than 100 different varieties in Nishikigoi. Nishikigoi means colorful carp in Japanese and it is a proper name of Japanese Koi. Outside Japan, we simply call them ‘Koi’. Let me introduce the 3 most popular varieties from Japan.
Gosanke (top 3) are Kohaku, Showa, Taisho Sanke
Showa is a short name of Showa Sanshoku or Showa Sanke.
As you can see from the name of Sanshoku, this is also three colored Koi. Just like Taisho, Showa is a period of Japanese history from 1926-1989 corresponding to the reign of Showa emperaor. In other words, Showa is Koi with three colors that was developed in the era of Showa.
Sanke and Showa are both three colored Koi. Many are confused with the difference. To make it very simple, the difference is black marking on its head. If you see black on its head, it is Showa. Of course, there are always some exceptions. But you can use this methods from today.
Kohaku, Sanke and Showa are called “Gosanke” too. Gosanke translate to “the three families” in Japanese. Gosanke is not just for Koi culture. It simply means the most popular or admired three things within a group. Kohaku, Sanke and Showa definitely represents Japanese Koi and deserves the title of “Gosanke”
