Tropical Storm Atsani delivered heavy downpours to Kaohsiung and the Hengchun Peninsula Friday, but so far it has failed to relieve Taiwan''s water shortage. Areas hardest hit by the drought barely saw any rainfall, leaving farmers wanting more.
Warning lights are flashing red at Taiwan''s four largest reservoirs. Tainan''s Baihe Reservoir is down to less than 10% capacity. Water levels at Miaoli''s Mingde and Nantou''s Wushe reservoirs have fallen under the 20% mark. Meanwhile Taiwan''s biggest reservoir, the Tsengwen Reservoir, is at under 30% capacity. In the north, Shihmen Reservoir is at under 50% capacity. Most reservoirs in Hsinchu, Miaoli and Taichung are also on low water level alert.
