This quick lesson is based on the classic blues rhythm guitar pattern from "I'm Tore Down," written by SonnyThompson and made famous by Freddie King. OK, I realize this video is more than one minute, but it's worth it ! Here's an important take-away from this lesson: rhythm guitar playing doesn't always involve strumming chords! Now, let's get down to the details. your picking hand can do all downstrokes. Your fretting hand should use only your index and ring fingers. Because the first two notes in this pattern involve a one-octave jump, I call this The Octave Riff. I play the intro to "I'm Tore Down" but the three versions of the riff I play (starting on G, starting on F, and then starting on C) are all you need to play the rhythm guitar part which represents the heart of the tune, Maybe someday I'll do a feature on the whole tune because it's a favorite of mine.
