Science is part of our daily existence. Soap making, for example, uses an understanding of science to make it if you are using the cold process batch method.
In this method you use Lye water. To make lye water( a very strong base solution) you combine sodium hydroxide and distilled water. This results in an exothermic reaction- it gets VERY HOT.
Safety First:
Always wear gloves, long sleeves and eye protection
Always use a safe container (PP #5 plastic, 100% stainless steel, and or Pyrex glass- although this last one isn't necessarily recommended)
Always ADD sodium hydroxide TO the distilled water.
