Karolyi rose to fame in his native Romania, where he and his wife Martha transformed gymnastics by introducing younger athletes to the elite level. At the 1976 Montreal Olympics, Karolyi's protégé, Nadia Comaneci, scored the first perfect 10 in Olympic history. This groundbreaking performance earned Comaneci three gold medals and cemented Karolyi's reputation as a master coach.
After defecting to the United States in 1981, Karolyi’s influence only grew. He guided Mary Lou Retton to become the first American woman to win an Olympic all-around title in 1984 and later coached the "Magnificent Seven," who secured the U.S. women's first team gold at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
Despite his achievements, Karolyi's legacy became controversial in his later years. Allegations of abusive coaching methods and his connection to the Larry Nassar scandal overshadowed his contributions to the sport. While Karolyi denied knowledge of Nassar's actions, the fallout led to the closure of the Karolyi ranch as a national training center.
Nadia Comaneci paid tribute to her former coach, saying, "A big impact and influence in my life. RIP Bela Karolyi." Dominique Moceanu, a former gymnast and vocal critic, acknowledged Karolyi's complex legacy, stating that while his methods were harsh, they also shaped her resilience.
