Dr. Peter Crane, Curator, Gladys Brooks Memorial Library, Mount Washington Observatory
This winter marks the 150th anniversary of the Huntington-Hitchcock Expedition, which was the first to spend a winter atop Mount Washington. Led by two geologists, the 1870-1871 adventure occupied the summit to explore and document the mountain's remarkable winter weather. The expedition paved the way for the U.S. Signal Service weather station on the summit, and served as the inspiration for re-occupying.
