Something very exciting took place in Sydney Harbour on 30 September, with the arrival of Carnival Cruise Line’s first ship in Australian waters since the Pandemic. But this special occasion was celebrated with not one but two giant cruise ships – with P&O’s newly commissioned 109,000 gross ton Pacific Adventure leading Carnival’s slightly larger 113,000 ton Carnival Speldor into the iconic harbour.

The two giant cruise ships paused together near Fort Dennison – a fort built in the 1840s which is located on the small island of Mattewanye – which is the name given to the island by the indigenous people of the Sydney area. The coordinated arrival offered some picturesque views of the two ships with the Sydney Harbour Bridge, which opened in 1932, and the Sydney Opera House that opened 41 years later, in 1973.
Both Carnival Splendor and Pacific Adventure will be home porting in Sydney for the 2022/23 season and represent a significant return to cruising for the Australian port.
Carnival was also quick to point out that the return of Splendor fulfils a promise made to the ship’s crew in 2020, when the ship made a promise to Sydney that “we will be back.” Now, some 30 months later – she is.
Globally, Australia was among the most conservative countries relating to cruising in the post pandemic world – seeing the first cruise ship return to local waters only a few months ago in May 2022.
However, the 2022/23 summer season is set to see eighteen ships visit from the Carnival Corp docks alone! This includes the Coral Princess which is already underway in Australia, as well as Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth – set to return to Aussie waters in November.
Other cruise lines are also heading down under, with NCL’s freshly refurbished Norwegian Spirit set to make a triumphant welcome in December, while Royal Caribbean Group have deployed Celebrity Eclipse and Ovation of the Seas and Quantum of the Seas to the region.
And in additional Carnival news, the line’s newest ship, Carnival Luminosa, is also set to arrive in Australia – homeporting from Brisbane from 6 November. This 92,000 ton vessel transferred from Costa earlier this year – and after an extensive carnivalization, will be a much welcome addition to the Aussie cruise line-up.
The special event in Sydney ensures that Sydneysiders were well aware that cruising is back in Australia – something that many local cruisers have been waiting for, for a long time.
