The BSc. Nursing (Intellectual Disability) is a full-time four year degree programme offered by the Department of Nursing & Midwifery, University of Limerick in conjunction with the Daughter of Charity Services. A wide range of clinical experiences are incorporated throughout the four years including early intervention, residential settings and community.On successful completion of the programme students will be able to present for registration with An Bord Altranais and practice as a Registered Nurse Intellectual Disability (R.N.I.D.).The Department of Nursing and Midwifery had received approval from An Bord Altranais for the programme.
The BSc. Nursing (Intellectual Disability) is based on a philosophy of inclusion, empowerment and valuing people.This programme is designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to become an analytical and reflective practitioner able to provide a holistic and caring approach to clients with an intellectual disability.The overall aim of the programme is to faciliate the professional and personal development of each individual student. It will enable them to integrate humanistic, scientific and research based principles enhancing their knowledge and understanding of the physical, emotional, cognitive, social and spiritual needs of persons with intellectual disabilities. This knowledge will be acquired through the study of nursing, biological sciences, social sciences and related disciplines.
