These remarkable images offer a rare glimpse inside the cockpit (top right) and bomb bay (bottom left) of the Cold War aircraft at its hangar at Robin Hood Airport, Doncaster (bottom right), before it loses its flying permit later this month. Originally designed to carry Britain's nuclear weapons into the heart of the Soviet Union, the Vulcan XH588 served as an RAF bomber before being retired from military service in the 1990s. The aircraft was restored and was once again fit for flight in 2007 (top left in 2008). It delighted millions of Britons this summer as it made its farewell tour. But now the historic bomber is just days away from touching down for good. Pictured inset, pilot Martin Withers.
