The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted ‘very heavy rainfall’ across parts of India in the coming weeks, with an ‘above normal rainfall’ prediction for September in most regions except the extreme northwest, parts of the southern peninsula, northern Bihar, and northeastern Uttar Pradesh. Northwest India recorded 253.9 mm of rainfall in August, the second highest since 2001. Meanwhile, states in the northeast, Kerala, and Vidarbha in Maharashtra experienced deficient rainfall. The IMD also issued a warning about Cyclone Asna, which is expected to move away from the Indian coast after causing heavy rainfall and flooding in Gujarat. Andhra Pradesh is already facing severe flooding, prompting state IT and Education Minister Nara Lokesh to visit affected areas to assess damage and ensure relief efforts are underway. Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has urged officials to remain on high alert and take necessary emergency measures amid ongoing heavy rains and a cyclone warning.
