Ted Wilinski is a seasoned professional with over four decades of experience in various aspects of energy engineering. Armed with both bachelor's and master's degrees in mechanical engineering, Ted began his journey as an Industrial Service engineer for a utility company, establishing himself as a crucial link between various industries. His expertise expanded into consulting engineering, where he focused on energy audits and commissioning building systems. Eventually, Ted founded his own consulting engineering firm, specializing in energy conservation and high-performance facility operations.
Recognizing the potential for broader impact in energy conservation, Ted transitioned into technical education, joining Milwaukee Area Technical College. There, he developed and taught the Sustainable Facility Operations degree program and later led the creation of the Building Automated Systems (BAS) program. This 1-year diploma program was developed in collaboration with industry experts and imparts essential control technician skills without being tied to a specific vendor. Wilinski developed a unique capstone class where students function as HVAC system contractors and apply their knowledge to solve real-world projects. Ted's commitment extends to providing an immersive learning environment, featuring a state-of-the-art lab equipped with air handling units and hands-on experiences. Despite grappling with challenges related to student retention, Ted underscores the lucrative career prospects for BAS graduates, ensuring a consistent supply of skilled technicians ready to meet the evolving workforce needs of the building automation field.
