Today we are discussing a rather fun topic: what things you will most definitely have to deal with at some point when growing orchids!

First off, there is one thing I did not include and this is losing orchids. Most of us have lost orchids due to various causes, but the ratio of lost to thriving orchids is rather encouraging! no point in bringing you down, if you are talented, knowledgeable and most of all.. LUCKY! you might not lose any orchids :D I hope you don't!
1. Set back Orchids!
Orchids grow continuously, but when something stresses them, they can stale and get set back! New growths will be smaller and might not bloom at all! All kinds of stress, starting with environment change and damaged roots or leaves can set back an orchid. New orchids might get stressed in the store, so you absolutely cannot avoid it with most orchids. Some examples here [ Ссылка ]
2. Non blooming Orchids!
Did you wait enough time for the orchid to grow and reach its blooming season? Was the orchid set back? Is the orchid recovering or sick? These are questions you should ask yourself when your orchid delays blooming. Here is how to identify a spike though [ Ссылка ]
3. Pests!
All plants get pests, orchids included! Inevitably you will get them. Here is your first aid in the subject [ Ссылка ]
4. Spots on the leaves!
Some orchids have natural dark purple pigmentation, nothing to worry about! but if these spots are brown or black and they spread, it is time to get involved. Here are more examples

5. Root rot!
It can happen due to various reasons, starting from suffocated roots, to pests in the medium. Here are some examples

6. Broken flower spikes!
Oh no, such frustrating times :( sometimes the spikes are just beyond saving, but if they are still attached, maybe we can save them! [ Ссылка ]
7. Bad smells!
Most probably old, degraded organic medium releases a not so pleasant smell. You should definitely repot any orchid that smells bad! [ Ссылка ]
8. Aerial roots!
Epiphyte orchids grow roots in the air naturally, so they will ofcourse start to grow them all over the place! all is ok, learn to enjoy them because they are important :) Want to know even more about the fabulous roots? [ Ссылка ]
9. Lots of fun!
Starting with watching them grow and ending with how we grow and display them, orchids give us a lot of freedom of expression! Beyond everything, orchids are fun to grow!
