What if...Radiohead were produced by Stock, Aitken & Waterman? Imagine, if you will, an alternative world, not unlike our own. It's 1992, and Radiohead are putting the finishing touches to their debut LP, 'Pablo Honey'. Unfortunately, just as the album nears completion, their A&R representative is fired from EMI, and his replacement is less-than-enamoured with the band's work, considering it to be depressing and uncommercial. Desperate for a hit, he calls in the legendary team of Mike Stock, Matt Aitken and Pete Waterman to take over production of the album, much to the band's chagrin. The team are unimpressed by Radiohead's music, with Waterman grumbling that it is "not very catchy", and "won't get anyone dancing". Nevertheless, they give the album the full Hit factory treatment, ramping up tempos, and replacing all of the instrumentation with synths and drum machines. Unfortunately, the resulting record alienates the band's original audience, and fails to connect with UK pop fans, although lead single, 'Creep', does hit the top 20 in Greece and the Netherlands. Disheartened, the band breaks up, but they do experience an unexpected revival of interest in 1998, when a cover of 'Creep' by top Europoppers The Vengaboys, finally hits the UK charts.

I do not own the copyright to the song, Thom Yorke's lead vocal or any of the clips or images used.
Backing track arranged, performed and recorded by me, using basic Garageband sounds and a midi keyboard. I synced the original vocal to the grid, sped the tempo up to 110bpm, and programmed the drums, layering three different drum machines. I added 12 different synths, layering bass sounds, pianos, brass, strings and bells. I sampled a line of vocal to use for a classic SAW-style middle-eight ("I-I-I-I'm a creep!"), then threw in the classic 'Think' sample (the bit that goes 'Whoo! Yeah!) to complete the early-90s Hi-NRG picture.
