June 18, 2023, marks the 40th anniversary of astronaut Dr. Sally Ride becoming the first American woman in space. To commemorate this historic milestone, Cosmosphere Senior Vice President of Communication and Chief Development Officer Mimi Meredith interviews Dr. Steven Hawley, former NASA astronaut who flew on five Space Shuttle flights. Hawley shares insights into NASA's hiring the "Thirty-five New Guys," a new team of astronauts. Married to Dr. Ride from 1982 to 1987, Dr. Hawley provides a glimpse into Ride's work with NASA, her personality, motivations, and relates a few adventures that he shared with Ride.
