이재명 체포동의안 국회 본회의 보고 與추천 진실화해위원 부결에 산회
Today, a motion was reported to South Korea's National Assembly asking whether to arrest the head of the nation's main opposition party.
The motion will likely be put to an anonymous vote next week.
Our National Assembly correspondent Han Seong-woo with the details.
The last step ahead of a parliamentary vote on whether to arrest Democratic Party of Korea chairman Lee Jae-myung has been made.
The motion seeking lawmakers' consent for Lee's arrest, which is required by law while parliament is in session, was officially reported to the National Assembly on Friday just over a week after the country's prosecution requested an arrest warrant for him on allegations of corruption, the first time in Korea's constitutional history that prosecutors have sought such a warrant for the sitting leader of a main opposition party.
Lee's mainly being accused of having used his former position as mayor of Seongnam City to grant favors to property developers so they could pocket some 610 million U.S. dollars in illegal proceeds for the Daejang-dong project at the expense of the city government, which prosecutors say suffered some 380 million dollars in financial damages.
He's also suspected of taking bribes from corporations via Seongnam Football Club in the mid-2010s.
The Democratic Party holds 169 out of 299 seats in parliament and Lee's arrest requires a majority of registered lawmakers to be present when the motion's put to a vote and a majority of those lawmakers in attendance to approve it.
The anonymous vote's expected to take place at the Assembly on February 27th.
If prosecutors fail to win parliamentary consent, it's widely expected they will indict the opposition leader without detaining him.
Meanwhile, Friday's plenary session came to an abrupt close when the ruling People Power Party made a group exit after a motion to include a particular member it recommended into the nation's Truth and Reconciliation Commission was rejected in a vote.
Bills that were expected to be passed, including the Yoon Suk Yeol administration's government reorganization plan to upgrade the veterans ministry to a Cabinet-level body as well as launch a new agency devoted to consular affairs, will likely be dealt with on the 27th.
