"This morning at around 05.30 I was praying when suddenly I heard a loud gun fire, then return fire stared. We ran inside our homes to remain safe. The gun fire hit the door and then the attackers got inside the guest house, the guards were on the roof. Foreign guests inside were crying out for help, but we could not help them, there were a lot of shooting, some were killed and injured."

29. SOUNDBITE: (English) Adrian Edwards, UN spokesman:
"This morning we've had a very serious attack on us here in Kabul, at a guest house here in the city. The guest house was invaded by around half a dozen people, gunfire broke out, there seems to have been a subsequent fire in the guest house. When I'm speaking to you at this moment, the situation is still evolving. We have confirmed at this time six United Nations international staff killed in this, we have nine injured, some of those are quite serious. Those numbers may possibly rise. At the moment all our efforts are focused on looking after our staff, ensuring that those who are involved in this are getting the care that they need, and also ascertaining that we know exactly who was in that building and that they are accounted for."

"For the moment we continue as normal, we obviously will have to adjust our security in light of this. But this is a very serious incident, it's also tragic. These are civilians working for Afghanistan. This is a totally senseless thing that's happened here, it's an outrage and it's a tragedy. We are at the moment having to inform the families of what's happened."
