FIRST STAGE OF CBI: Runners.
It’s suggested that they are aware of what they are doing but cannot control their actions, possibly evident by the fact that some runners can be heard crying and their expressions of horror or sadness.
Since the eyes are targeted first by the cordyceps, runners have poor eyesight, but a person can still be spotted by them. They have heightened awareness, and regardless of their poor eyesight they seem to be capable of sighting people easily. When not attacking people, runners moan in pain due to the fungal growth taking place in their bodies.
They have glowing red eyes and have slight fungal growth on their skin; they are deformed to a certain degree and their body language is very sluggish and twitchy.
Sometimes a runner will not attack at all, even when a human stands right before them. These non-aggressive runners will only attack if they are startled by a gunshot, an object being thrown, quick movement or any noise, in which case they will then lose control and attack. They are known to swarm people in groups, and will tackle anyone head on and use their fists to violently smash their victims to death; if not, they will bite their victims.
The urge to attack happens involuntarily and unwillingly by the host. Runners attack in hordes, they flail their arms in attempts to trample and tackle the person, instinctively aiming to bite. They can be strangled, burned, knifed, meleed or shot to be killed.
