Semiconductor heterostructureHeterostructure is a semiconductor structure with several contacts of two semiconductors different in chemical composition. This structure is grown out of different semiconductors generally different by prohibited zone gap.Heterojunction forms between two different materials. It can have increased concentration of carriers.Unlike homostructure it has more flexibility in designing necessary potential profile of conduction and valence zones. Two methods of growth can be mentioned:1) Molecular-beam epitaxy allowing growth of heterostructures with precision up to atomic monolayer.2) Chemical deposition from vapor stage using organometallic compounds allows growth of heterostructures at faster rate but with lower precision than the first method.Growing heterostructures is actively used in production of solar cells and LEDs.
