Over the years Canada has produced many great vocal artists singing in a variety of styles from the jazz, country/folk and classical genres.
One of these is the lovely and talented contemporary jazz singer Jaclyn Guillou, who was nominated for “Best Jazz Album” in the Juno Awards for 2016.
Jaclyn has studied and learned from the original jazz masters from early jazz to the modern style that she is currently performing.
She has traveled worldwide and has had extensive tour experience with very talented musicians.
Her vocal style showcases her range, diction, tone and phrasing, but mostly her feeling for the tune that she is singing. She has not emulated her idols, but rather, has created her own unique performance style. As I see it, she sings in her own sweet way, with reference to the Dave Brubeck original that she sings with her quintet, viz; “ In Your Own Sweet Way” on YouTube. On this tune she wrote alternative lyrics to the original ones which were more meaningful to her.
Although Jaclyn has moved on to her “cool “ musical styling, she was very capable of performing the American Classics as demonstrated on this series of recordings made in 2013.
On these she is supported by one of my favourite reed musicians, viz; Evan Arntzen, together with the wonderful Bruno Hubert Trio.( Bruno – Piano, James Meger – Bass, Andrew Millar – Drums).
Back Up Vocals (Company ' B' Jazz Band) - Juhli Conlin, Emily Lyall and Shannon Scott.
All of these superb artists are from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
Enjoy !
