(28 Sep 2014) Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called for a no-fly zone over Syria on Sunday, adding that the US-led airstrikes are only a temporary solution in the fight against extremists from the Islamic State group.
Speaking at the opening session of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Istanbul, Erdogan also said humanitarian aid must urgently be delivered to Syria, which shares a 910-kilometre (565 mile) border with Turkey.
The United States and five Arab allies launched an aerial campaign against Islamic State fighters on Tuesday with the aim of rolling back and ultimately crushing the extremist group, which has created a proto-state spanning the Syria-Iraq border.
The recent surge in battles between Kurdish fighters and IS militants in the northern Syrian town of Kobani has sent over 160-thousand people fleeing into neighbouring Turkey.
At the two-day forum's introductory news conference, Turkey's minister for European Union affairs said the timing of the meeting was crucial as conflict in the region is threatening peace security and stability across the globe.
Some 600 participants from over 70 countries are expected to discuss challenges facing Turkey, Europe and the Middle East.
