Felda Triang 1 was rocked by two explosions after the bomb disposal unit successfully detonated a World War 2 bomb weighing 226kg in a large-scale operation here today.
The explosions were greeted with cheers from some 500 settlers who had been evacuated as early as 8am to the Mara Junior Science College (MRSM) located some 1km from the site where the old bomb was discovered.
Bukit Aman Weapons unit (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosive) assistant director Assistant Commissioner Mohammad Rafee Abu Bakar, who led the operations along with his 30-member team, said investigations revealed it was too dangerous to remove the aerial bomb, dropped by the British during the war.
Rafee said the first controlled explosion at 11.15am was to remove the reactive substance from the old bomb to avoid a total eruption which was then followed by a second blast 15 minutes later which was to destroy the fuse and booster.
