There are terms used to refer to different parts of the body in relation to gravity. They are often described as imaginary vertical or horizontal lines.
When we look at the coronal alignment, the coronal plane divides the right and left side of the body. Axial plane is used more for transverse rotations. Sagittal alignment looks from the lateral side and divides the front and back of the body.
Sagittal imbalance is when the spine is out of balance, looking from front to back. Generally, if there is any imbalance in the sagittal plane, there is an issue within your spinal structure that can affect the pelvis, knees, and feet.
Kyphosis is when you have too much bending in the thoracic spine.
Lordosis is when you have a forward curvature of the spine, usually in the cervical or lumbar spine.
There are different types of Sagittal Imbalance
The first is called Flatback syndrome, which is when the lumbar spine has lost its normal lordosis, and the spine is flat. This causes compressive forces that can negatively affect the spine as it is too flat.
Kyphosis or hyper-kyphosis is when the thoracic spine starts going forward. It can be anterior or posterior-driven hyperkyphosis.
Chin-on-chest syndrome is severe hyperkyphosis. When the curvature of the spine has gone so far forward, they cannot even look up.
Sagittal Imbalance is usually detected on an x-ray, but it can also be measured posturally to confirm if there is a positive or negative sagittal balance. Normally, it would be neutral and either still affects your body negatively.
There is no guaranteed way to correct Sagittal Imbalance, as every case is different. The goal is to restore normal balance or be as close as possible.
The underlying cause needs to be determined, then start personalized treatments to restore normal spinal pelvic alignment. Treatments can include chiropractic care, personalized exercises, home therapy, bracing, and rehabilitation.
For normal function and optimal movement, the spine needs to be in optimal alignment. We offer proactive treatment to address the underlying cause and attempt to restore normal alignment so that the Sagittal balance can remain normal.
