Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday called for carrying forward the "Saihanba Spirit" formed and fostered decades ago through arduous afforestation in harsh conditions in north China's Hebei Province, an inspiration driving millions for gaining hard-won achievements in tortuous pioneering days.

President Xi urged inheriting and enhancing such kind of hard-working, tenacious and enterprising spirit in ecological conservation and forestry management while inspecting Chengde City in the province, during which he heard reports on local development of ecological conservation and afforestation, and checked the cultivation of forest woods.

At the local Saihanba Mechanical Forest Farm, President Xi observed the natural landscape, listened to the introduction about Hebei's overall plan to protect mountains, rivers, forests, farmlands, lakes, grassland and sand system, and to manage the forest farm.

Later, President Xi went to the Shanghai Memorial Forest, the farm's first man-made forest, to see the growth of trees, learn about how the forest farm has managed to promote the Saihanba Spirit and high-quality development.

President Xi said the work of the local staff has great significance and is sure to inspire others to follow their example, which also promotes the building of the national ecological civilization. And the Saihanba Spirit has been a vital part of the spirit of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

"The Saihanba Spirit is part of the Chinese civilization, and it has been an inspiration. China needs to promote this kind of spirit so as to better develop the country and the green economy as well as ecological civilization. The people of Saihanba also need to redouble their efforts and carry forward the construction from the new starting point. I wish you could accomplish new goals on the journey ahead," President Xi said.

Established in 1962, the Saihanba Forest Farm is the world's largest man-made forest, a 750-square kilometer barrier situated 300 kilometers north of Beijing, saving the Chinese capital from desertification.

中國國家主席習近平周一呼籲弘揚幾十年前在河北省艱苦條件下艱苦植樹造林形成和培育的“塞罕壩精神”，激勵數百萬人在曲折的創業歲月中取得來之不易的成就。

習主席在河北省承德市視察時，他聽取了當地生態保護和植樹造林發展情況的匯報，並檢查了林木的種植情況，期間，提出要繼承和發揚這種在生態保護和林業管理中艱苦奮鬥、頑強進取的精神。

在當地的塞罕壩機械林場，習主席參觀了自然景觀，聽取了關於河北省山、河、林、田、湖、草、沙系統保護和林場管理總體方案的介紹。

隨後，習主席前往農場首座人工林——上海紀念林，親眼目睹樹木生長，了解林場如何弘揚塞罕壩精神和高質量發展。

習主席表示，當地員工的工作意義重大，必將激勵他人以身作則，也為國家生態文明建設起到了推動作用。塞罕壩精神一直是中國共產黨精神的重要組成部分。

“塞罕壩精神是中華文明的一部分，也是一種鼓舞。中國需要弘揚這種精神，更好地發展國家和綠色經濟、生態文明。塞罕壩人民也需要再接再厲，在新起點上推進建設。祝你們在前進的道路上再創佳績。”習主席說。

塞罕壩林場建於 1962 年，是世界上最大的人工林，佔地 750 平方公里，位於北京以北 300 公里處，使中國首都免於沙漠化。
