Miranda is an adult female Gould's Wattled Bat who was noticed hanging below a front doorstep.
Concerned, the MOP (member of public) called for rescue.
Microbats hanging near the ground in winter are always in trouble, so rescue was urgent.
Because the MOP was just about to go out, I didn't look at her, just bundled her up and left.
When I got her to the carer, somewhat warmer and more alert, we found that she was missing the distal triangle of her wing (this is the wingtip triangle and is necessary for flight).
It was probably secondary to a cat attack but since the batties don't come in with case histories and witness statements, it's usually just a guess.
Naturally, at this time of the year, she was pregnant which makes life trickier.
I was trying to find a carer for her (and her babies when they were born) so she could at least raise her babies who could then buddy with other babies so they could be released together; it's tricky because the mum would be unable to be released she couldn't show her babies around her territory which meant the babies needed to be buddied up with other babies who had a mum in care.
Unfortunately, Miranda, the pregnant lady batty, died overnight (which adds credence to the cat attack theory), with her tiny foetuses.
RIP Miranda (from Miranda)
