(13 Mar 2021) Bolivia's former interim president Jeanine Áñez was arrested by police early Saturday morning on charges of sedition connected to the 2019 presidential elections that precipitated the resignation and ouster of then-president Evo Morales.
Áñez, who governed the country on an interim basis between 2019 and 2020, was arrested in Trinidad, the capital of the northeastern province of Beni, and transferred to La Paz.
The news of Áñez's arrest was confirmed by the Bolivian government minister, Eduardo Del Castillo.
"We are not pursuing any kind of political persecution", Del Castillo told reporters Saturday and added "justice is following its course".
A judge will decide whether to grant Áñez house arrest or remand her in custody while the investigation continues.
The former president is accused of promoting an alleged coup against Morales along with several political leaders.
Áñez and other opponents have rejected the accusation and accused the current president, Luis Arce, and Morales of unleashing a "judicial persecution" for revenge.
Along with Añez, former justice minister Alvaro Coimbra, and another high-ranking former official were arrested on Friday on the same charges, both accused in the sedition trial.
The authorities are looking for other collaborators, as well as military and police chiefs.
