Amid Russia’s war against Ukraine, Finland and Sweden submitted a joint application to join NATO on May 18. Russian President Putin unusually played down the two Nordic countries’ bid to join the Western military alliance. However, the surprise opposition came from NATO member Turkey with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan threatening to veto the bid. Experts say Turkey’s posturing is meant to secure a wide range of military, political, and economic concessions from the West.
