Undeterred by the threat of US sanctions, India is going ahead in full swing with its induction plan for the advanced S-400 Triumf system.
An initial team of almost 100 officers and airmen are being trained in Russia at present to operate the S-400 system.
Besides the ground work related to its deployment has also started.
The S-400 Triumf or SA-21 Growler is an anti-aircraft weapon system developed in the 1990s by Russia's Almaz Central Design Bureau as an upgrade of the S-300 family.
In 2017, the S-400 was described by The Economist as "one of the best air-defence systems currently made".
It is capable of detecting targets at a speed of Mach 14. Its detection range is 600km. It can engage 60 targets simultaneously. The System response time is 9–10 seconds.
It can target wide range of aerial threats from fighter jets, strategic bombers, AWACS.
Russia claims that the S-400 can even intercept ballistic missiles with velocity of 4,800 meters per second. The radar is also capable of locking and shoot down, 5th-generation stealth fighters like the American F-35 Lightning-II jets.
One unit of S-400 system comprising up to eight battalions, Each battalion of S-400 has eight launchers and Each Launcher has 4 tubes.
India and Russia has inked $5.43 billion (Rs 40,000 crore) contract in October 2018 for the 5 units of S-400 air defense system.
Each battalion of S-400 has eight launcher and Each Launcher has 4 tubes. India has ordered for two different types of missiles with a range of 400KM and 250KM instead of four. India will be using Akash and MRSAM air defense system for aerial threats within a range of 25 to 90KMs. The S-400 Triumf coupled with Akash and MRSAM missile system will act as a two-layer defense system.
The S-400 system automatically picks up the "most suited" missile to launch at an incoming aerial threat. Its radars, with the primary acquisition one with a 600-km range, can track hundreds of targets simultaneously.
All five mobile squadrons of the S-400 air defence systems, , will be progressively delivered by April 2023. The highly-automated S-400s will be “suitably positioned in the western, northern and eastern sectors” to cater for threats from both China and Pakistan.
The first defense regiment of S-400 will start arriving from November onwards and will come into active service by end of 2021 or early 2022. The deployment of S-400 is expected aound the National Capita Delhi.
The second regiment of S-400 which will include a long range radar, a command post vehicle, target aquisition radar, and two battalions of launchers.
The seond regiment will be delivered by mid of 2022 and remaining 3 will be by 2023.
The second regiment will be deployed in the easter sector of IAF.
IAF plans to deploy atleast 3 regiments in wetern sector that will cover whole of western sector against Pakistan and 1 regiment in NE sector and one in Easter Sector against China.
Recently, the US imposed sanctions on Turkey under the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA) for purchase of S-400 missile defences from Russia. India, however, remains “very hopeful” to get a “national security waiver” from the incoming Biden administration from the US law CAATSA, which was enacted in 2017 to prevent countries from buying Russian weapons or Iranian oil.
