In this video I compare The Nikon Z5 with v1.20 firmware versus v1.40 in video mode with two lenses to see if there is a noticeable difference in autofocus performance as well as the refresh rate of visual indicators on the Z5's LCD screen. I also have a few comparisons of the Z5 with the Canon EOS M6 Mark II with lenses that provide a similar field of view.
I'm not testing photography in this video. I found v1.20 comparable to the Canon EOS M6 Mark II camera in that situation. I'm assuming the latest firmware is a step up. Though, I will eventually get a chance in the future to try the Z5 for people photography. One disappointment is that they didn't add face and eye detection to the wide area autofocus mode. That would have make the entire feature more functional. EDIT: Late May 2023, I've used the camera at multiple conventions with v1.4 firmware. I haven't noticed a difference in the percentage of properly focused photos taken compared to the previous firmware. That said, the camera is responsive when I'm doing this type of photography. What would really help the camera is wide area face/eye detect mode but I doubt Nikon will add that feature to the Z5 at this point. Auto area face/eye detect is decent in continuous AF when I have it set to "focus" rather than "release".

• Eye-detection AF is now available during video recording.
• [Save focus position] and [Recall focus position] have been added to the roles that can be assigned using Custom Setting f2 [Custom controls] in the [CUSTOM SETTING MENU]. As of February 14, 2023, these options were supported with the following lenses:

• Improved the refresh rate for the focus points displayed in live view during subject-tracking and face/eye-detection AF.
• The behavior of autofocus during memory recall has been improved to ensure that the focus position will not change in any focus mode even if the shutter-release button is pressed halfway while focus recall is in progress.
• Fixed an issue that sometimes caused the camera to stop responding when [Auto] was selected for [Set Picture Control] in the [PHOTO SHOOTING MENU].
