Comet ATLAS is not going to live up to what we had hoped for. Unfortunately, it is crumbling away now.
But Comet SWAN has suddenly appeared. It's named from SOHO's Solar Wind Anisotropies Instrument from which it was discovered, which goes by the acronym "SWAN".
Comet SWAN is estimated to travel around the sun every 25 million years. For now, it is only view-able to those south of the equator. It will pass closest to Earth on May 12 at a distance of 51.8 million miles.
If Comet SWAN continues to brighten at its current pace, it could reach 3rd magnitude during the final week of May.
That would make it bright enough to be visible to the naked eye.
Those of us in the Northern Hemisphere might have an opportunity to see it, both very low in west-northwest sky after sunset and again very low in the east-northeast sky before sunrise.
