It's a sad occasion seeing any train go for scrap, but when its two of the trains you grew up around and enjoyed many journeys on, it's even sadder.
After 39 years carrying passengers around suburban South London, the Southern Class 455's have now been retired from service following the DfT's efforts for train operators to cut their costs. Given their age, all 46 units are now sadly destined for the scrapyard.
GB Railfreight's 66701 drags 455827 and 455831 on their final journeys past Reading following a crew change, with 5Q55 10:38 Stewarts Lane T&R.S.M.D to Newport Docks for their date with the world's biggest shredder. I believe both units were scrapped within 24-48 hours of arrival.
Many of you will know that the Southern Class 455's have been my favourite type of trains and they have probably been the most featured type of train on this channel (mainly due to them serving my local routes until Saturday!). As such, I'll be making a few videos to pay tribute to the class of 46 over the next week, so stay tuned!
