Losses the Germans and Austrians suffered during the Second Schleswig War against Denmark in 1864. Like the First Schleswig War it was fought over the control of the duchies of Schleswig, Holstein and Lauenburg. However unlike the First Schleswig War the Germans and Austrians gained control over these areas. Germany then control all these newly gained area's after the Austro-Prussian War, but after World War 1 Northern Schleswig would be returned to Denmark. Though many Danes in those territories became conscripts of the German army in WW1 where even today there is some resentment among families.
Fun fact the Second Schleswig War was the first war to be fought after the establishment of the Red Cross Movement.
