On 12 January 2001, Sven-Göran Eriksson held his first press conference as manager of the England national football team. Sharing a stage with FA Chief Executive Adam Crozier and FA Executive Director David Davies at the Football Association headquarters in Soho Square, Eriksson shared how he felt taking on the role. He discussed the ongoing hostility from British sports people and journalists to the idea of a non-British manager, the circumstances under which he left his previous job as manager of Italian side SS Lazio, and his hopes for England's future.
In January 2024, Eriksson revealed that he has been diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer. In his statement, the 75-year-old shared that he may only have months left to live, while he asserting his determination to "fight as long as possible'.
