It became an “impossible” mission when a thief attempting to steal a Gutenberg Bible lost his grip and fell six stories to the ground below. In 1969, a man hiding in the bathroom of Harvard University’s library waited for the building to close.
Climbing to the roof, he used a rope to lower himself into the room where a Gutenberg Bible was displayed. Putting the Bible in his knapsack, he began climbing down the rope, but he slipped and fell and fractured his skull.
The two volumes of the Bible sustained very little damage and are still on display at Harvard’s Widener Library. Johannes Gutenberg printed approximately 180 copies of the Bible in the early 15th century, selling out every copy before he even finished printing them!
