This story was written for the collection The Wisdom of Father Brown, published in 1914, following the success of The Innocence of Father Brown. I rather like the writing and this story is quite fun but I'm a little surprised that GKC or his editor chose this as the opening tale for the new collection as the plot is perhaps just a trifle, er, how can I put it, thin / predictable. Not wanting to put you off nor nuffink...
But it's a gentle introduction to the collection and I do think the stories improve as it goes along.
For those with a yen for some other works by different authors be of good cheer, my brothers and sisters, they will follow in due course!
Also, sorry I've been absent from the Yew Toob platform for a while. I cannot blame wrangling for a credit on the S Fry BBC programme, as that took minutes.
Quiz: can anyone recognise the make and model of the microphone I find myself using to record this story? There's a pat on the back and a firm handshake for the correct answer.
Meanwhile it's good to be back in ye olde recording booth and I hope, like Chesterton, to churn out a good few tales before Christmas, all being well with me and the world.
Stay strong, stay free! Be of good cheer!
