Kamakura is an awesome day trip away from the hustle and bustle of Tokyo and is within commutable distance. It is a good alternative spot for Kyoto (of course, none can compare to Kyoto herself) for those who don't have the time or the funds to visit that city.
Kamakura was the seat of power in Japan before it was transferred to the grounds in western Japan and so it still retains much of it's charm.
