A special CBI court in Bengaluru has acquitted former Karnataka chief minister BS Yeddyurappa in the Rs 40 crore Bellary bribery case. The CBI had registered FIR four years ago after the Supreme Court in May 2012 directed it to probe charges of undue favours to firms involved in illegal mining in lieu of donations to Prerana Educational and Social Trust. Immediately, after the court had acquitted him and others, Yadurappa tweeted to express his satisfaction over judgement.
Let's take a glance at the controversy:
The CBI had contended that Rs 20 crore was transferred by Jindal Steel Works (JSW) to the Trust. Purchase of 1 acre 12 guntas land in Rachenahali between March-April 2006 by sons and son in law of Yeddyurappa.
The land was part of the acquisition by BDA for Arkavathy lay out.
Yeddyurappa was forced to resign as Karnataka's first BJP chief minister on July 31, 2011 following corruption charges against him and his kin in the multi-crore Bellary bribery scam.
