Tenebrae, a Service of Darkness, begins with a fully lighted sanctuary. Scripture readings focus on the seven last words of Christ. As they are read, candles are extinguished and darkness increases as Jesus approaches death. In remembering our Lord's death, only one light is left burning, the Light of God's love. (The loud noise of the Closing of the Book acknowledges the fulfillment on the cross.) This last light is carried out of the sanctuary, reminding us of Christ's three days in the tomb. But like God's love, this light is never extinguished. It returns in anticipation of our Lord's Resurrection.
