The MSC’s Chief Science and Standards Officer, Dr Rohan Currey, explains how the organisation arrived at its new Fisheries Standard following the most comprehensive review undertaken in the 25-year history of the MSC. He also talks about what it means and what happens next.
The MSC held public consultations and more stakeholders than ever before contributed to the development of the revised Standard. The review began in 2018 and has involved participation of more than 1,000 stakeholders. Throughout 2020 and 2021, nearly 200 stakeholders participated in public consultation workshops, and we received over 450 survey responses.
We also engaged with our stakeholders through online webinars and conferences, which were attended by over 1,300 participants.
The new Standard was approved by the MSC Board in June 2022.
