HARROGATE PARISH #25: SPOFFORTH WITH STOCKELD
Spofforth with Stockeld – “Land by a ford with a log fire”
Alright everyone, welcome to the biggest and most historically important village in the Southeastern corner of the Harrogate district, one with the ruins of a 13th century castle which attract people from miles around. They are located in Spofforth, about three miles north west of Wetherby and five miles south of Harrogate.
Spofforth stands on the River Crimple, a tributary of the River Nidd. That ties in nicely with its name. Spofforth is first attested in the Domesday Book, where it appears as Spoford. The name comes from the Old English words spot, which means "plot of land" and ford, which is, well…a ford, which passed over the Crimple. Spofforth grew as a village at a time when Knaresborough was the most important town in the area. Its not all about the castle either. There are several notable features in this one including the church, an old corn mill, another cricket club, and the route of an old railway. Modern amenities include two pubs, a shop and a school.
Notable people to have lived here include the 18th century Knaresborough road builder, Blind Jack Metcalf. He spent the later years of his life here and now, he rests in the churchyard. And that’s all before we consider Stockeld, a whole other ball game.
