On Friday, December 17, first lady Michelle Obama presented the 2010 National Medal for Museum and Library Services to representatives of The New York Botanical Garden in a White House ceremony. The National Medal, the highest honor the nation confers on these institutions, was accepted by Gregory Long, president of The New York Botanical Garden; Carrie Laney, Vice President for Government and Community Relations; and Karen Washington, a Bronx community activist who, along with the Botanical Garden's Bronx Green-Up program turned empty lots into beautiful gardens.
