(23 Jun 2019) THOUSANDS TAKE PART IN GAY PARADE IN BUCHAREST
Thousands took part in a colourful gay pride march through central Bucharest on Saturday (22 JUNE 2019).
Some came dressed in show-stopping outfits, while others waved rainbow flags and danced in the streets.
But there was a serious message behind the celebrations, a call for sexual diversity to be accepted, particularly by the country's politicians.
Florin Buhuceanu, of Accept, Romania's largest organisation advocating for LGBT rights, said he felt the attitudes of ordinary Romanians were changing faster than the nation's government.
He urged Romania's lawmakers to listen to the people, especially the younger generation who turned out in large numbers for the parade.
Romania decriminalised homosexuality in 2000 under pressure from the European Union and the United States, but members of the LGBT community say they're still discriminated against by some sections of Romanian society.
