We worry about malnourishment in children, often ignoring the health concerns that threaten their mothers. A healthy mother provides for a healthy family – it is this thought that helped flourish ‘Nutrigardens’, the brainchild of IAS Officer, Mission Director Jal Jeevan Mission, Government of Maharashtra, Ms. Vimala. Nutrigardens empower and nourish rural families in the Indian state of Maharashtra. Ms. Vimala takes us through the rewarding harvest of her innovative idea and how it is turning into a sustainable model for livelihood and nutrition.
About R Vimla:
R. Vimala is a seasoned public administrator with over 29 years of experience in various departments of the government and has contributed significantly to public welfare schemes. As the Chief Executive Officer of Maharashtra State Livelihoods Mission, she has been instrumental in creating more than 4.8 lakh self-help groups, associating with over 50 lakh families and generating sustainable livelihoods for over 18 lakh households. Her focus has been on working in cognizance with Sustainable Development Goals, specifically health, nutrition and sanitation. She propagates, Dasha Sutri, ten cardinal principles related to management of self-help groups which include regular meetings, savings, internal lending, repayment of loans, writing books of accounts leading to sustainable livelihoods. Currently working as Mission Director, Jal Jeevan Mission, Water Supply and Sanitation Department, Government of Maharashtra she is spearheading the Government of India's ambitious programme of Har Ghar Jal, pure drinking water in rural homes.
