This Gull’s Eye Guide is from Portland Marina – a beautiful marina on the Dorset coast which played host to the 2012 ‘London’ Olympic Sailing competitions.
Due to the marina’s location there are many opportunities for sailors and visitors alike. One of the most recommended stopping locations is the famous Jurassic Coast – where you might come across a dinosaur bone or two! A walk around Portland’s dramatic limestone cliffs to the lighthouse on the Bill is a one of the area’s popular attractions.
The marina offers a range of useful facilities including shore-side cafes, boat servicing facilities and also great transport links. For those looking to quench their thirst or grab a bite to eat – the restaurant/bar next to the marina office is a great choice. Slightly further afield is the excellent Cove Inn, famous for its great menu, local ales and Dorset ciders… all enjoyed with a beautiful view over West Bay.
Portland is home to the Sailing Academy and newly opened Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson Sailing Centre. Here children and adults can learn to sail, rent dinghies and take courses thanks to the facilities built in the memory of a great British sailor. The Marina has also recently formed its own Yacht Club that will host events encouraging boat owners to get on the water more often.
Chris and Christine Swain are regulars at Portland Marina describing it as ‘’Positively Mediterranean – when it is not too windy of course!’’ But their favourite thing is “How empty the waters are – inside and outside the harbour – you have all the space in the world!”
High winds are an occasional issue, which can ‘scream over the low Chesil Beach’ and conditions can be tricky for even the most experienced sailor due to the tidal swells along Portland Bill – so those planning to visit are recommended to thoroughly research conditions and possible hazards first.
But Portland Marina is well worth the effort as it’s situated on a peninsula separating two famously beautiful bays - Portland and Weymouth – so there are plenty of options for the keen sailor. Ringstead Bay is a couple of hours to the east and there’s also the picturesque Lulworth Cove or maybe Sandersfoot Castle to the north.
