Location : Kampung Sadir, Padawan, Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia.
The pride of Sadir- the longest surviving ‘nyaruok’ event in Borneo. Whereby one village makes a reciprocal Gawai visit to another village and in this case it is even more special because the other village is from across the border in Indonesia. The only 2 other villages that still hold on to this tradition are Gumbang ([ Ссылка ]) and Padang Pan ([ Ссылка ]) in the Bau region with their Indonesian counterparts in Siding, all of which we have been honoured to have participated in.
While we may have missed out on the first leg a week earlier to Mangkau, we made sure that we did not on the return leg. Lucky Sadir with some financial backing from the government can host this event without any worries to the largest crowd ever, more than a hundred guests from Indonesia. This 3D2N event consisted of the welcoming ([ Ссылка ]), the unique ‘paren’ , lucky draws, cultural dance competition, singing, ‘ketong’ or Bidayuh bamboo xylophone demo ([ Ссылка ]), impromptu beauty contest ([ Ссылка ]) and of course the all night long dancing.
Kampung Sadir is blessed with so many waterfalls mostly within walking distance and when the weather gets too hot just help yourself to a dip. Or like we did, we drove all the way to nearby village Sibakar for its waterfall ([ Ссылка ]).
Congrats to village headman Tom, Riyeg, John and his team for making this year’s event a memorable one. See you next year.
