In this presentation, I provide an overview of the key insights and themes of two decades of fieldwork devoted to understanding the transnational migration circuits that lead tens of millions to employment in the wealthy states of the Arabian Peninsula. The vantage point I seek to establish is informed by migrants’ experiences in the Arab states to which they journey, by their experiences and the households they often depart in the states from which they come, and the network of actors that connect the two. This work draws on numerous publications, but much of what is presented here is distilled in the article also entitled Journey to Arabia, published in Anthropology Now in 2017.
